Soul Friend
The Celtic understanding of friendship found its inspiration and culmination in the sublime notion of the anam cara. Anam is the Gaelic word for soul; cara is the word for friend. So anam cara means soul friend. The anam cara is a person to whom you can reveal the hidden intimacies of your life. This friendship is an act of recognition. When you have an anam cara, your friendship cut across all convention and category. You are joined in an ancient and eternal way with the friend of your soul. Central here is the recognition and awakening of the ancient belong-ing between two friends. Since the human heart is never completely born, love is the continuous birth of creativity within and between us.
Friend
Word History: A friend is a lover, literally. The relationship between Latin amicus "friend" and amo "I love" is clear, as is the relationship between Greek philos "friend" and phileo "I love." In English, though, we have to go back a millennium before we see the verb related to friend. At that time, freond, the Old English word for "friend," was simply the present participle of the verb freon, "to love." The Germanic root behind this verb is *fri-, which meant "to like, love, be friendly to." Closely linked to these concepts is that of "peace," and in fact Germanic made a noun from this root, *frithu-, meaning exactly that. Ultimately descended from this noun are the personal names Frederick, "peaceful ruler," and Siegfried, "victory peace." The root also shows up in the name of the Germanic deity Frigg, the goddess of love, who lives on today in the word Friday, "day of Frigg," from an ancient translation of Latin Veneris dies, "day of Venus."
Near Death Experience
I had no physical conscious memories when I awoke from my car accident. The first woman I spoked to claimed to be my Mother. I went on a search in my mind and came up with a memory of being a baby in a crib with this woman looking over me. There were feelings and thoughts associated with the memories. I felt (that as a spirit) my spirit had known her spirit prior to incarnating into the world. I could recall a man standing next to her. She told me it was my Dad. I also had a memory (in spirit) of living in another time with a different body - and having a different relationship with his 'spirit' prior to the relationship we these two people as Mother/Father/Child.
I felt they were 'soul mates' to me. Buried deep within our hearts was a love that had always been from prior encounters with one another. There was the spirit within - and I was quickly learning about the 'human' on the outside. I felt there was a love in our 'soul' for one another - and that is why we were sharing a human relationship as 'parent and child.'
I quickly found that many people only associated a 'soul mate' with a physical and intimate lover. I felt that my parents and I had a 'soul love' hidden within us which made us 'lovers of one another's soul."
Because of the delicate nature of worldly descriptions - I feel many 'threw the baby' out with the bath water in trying to define and understand the meaning of what a 'soul mate' was to them. Most were only looking for a romantic and story book idealized version simular to "Romeo and Juliet." I felt many minds were missing the boat when it came to comprehension of the spiritual value hidden beneath the surface in their quest for a soul connection with others. It could be a friend, a brother, a sister, a nephew, an Uncle, Grandparents, a Teacher, and many other people that came into and touched our hearts in a divine way.
Wordly Quest
In a few years time, I too felt the worldly pull to find the one and only heart and soul to share my own with. I was able to retain a level of understanding from my NDE as a teenager that helped keep my mind open to the larger picture as it pertained to my spirit and my soul -- seperate and aside from my limited 'ego' point of view. The river of my own life has taken me on twists and turns, peaks and valleys on my own quest to fully understand the meaning behind the soul mate and twin soul concept - as it related to the revelations given to me though my mystical visions relating to the 'near death experience.'
